ISSUE # 26 Spring 2022

Ways of Seeing

Douglas David Seifert takes a close look at underwater vision; Alfie Minnaar sets sail with the unlikely captains of Raja Ampat's Calico Jack; Christian Horras almost gets speared by marlin chasing a Baja Magdalena bait ball and Mark 'Crowley' Russell reports how high blood pressure may live up to its reputation as a 'silent killer' of scuba divers. Plus - we head back to Bonaire with Jeremy Brown; round up the best of the season's Featured Photographers; review some of our favourite books and - of course - take a look at another curiosity of the ocean depths.

EYE CONTACT

For fish, and humans, vision is the most important sense in understanding the outside world. Douglas Seifert takes a detailed look at the eyes of the underwater world with some awesome photographs. Feast yours on theirs.

A PIRATE'S LIFE

Alfred Minnaar meets the unlikely owners of one of Raja Ampat's most successful liveaboards and discovers the fascinating story behind Calico Jack and enjoys some stunning diving.

A SILENT KILLER

Mark 'Crowley' Russell reports on a subject close to his heart - how high blood pressure plays a dangerous role in the often fatal lung condition known as an IPO. Every diver should read this personal report.

A MOST UNUSUAL DAY

Christian Horras shares a fabulous day spent watching striped marlin and sea lions feast on bait balls of migrating sardines off Baja California in Mexico. A high-energy, adrenaline-filled adventure on the ocean.

PLUS: Marine curio – stubby squid •  Latest book reviews • Four of our favourite Favourite Featured Photographers • Why Bonaire is the perfect resort
